Ingredients

Main Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1½ cups crumbled saltine crackers
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon Italian herbs
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Dash of cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour (for coating)

For the Gravy:

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat Your Oven:
    • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the Beef Mixture:
    • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, crumbled saltine crackers, 1 cup milk, Italian herbs, onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and pepper.
    • Mix gently until just combined.
  3. Shape the Hamburger Steaks:
    • Divide the beef mixture into 8 equal portions and shape each into a ½-inch-thick steak.
  4. Coat and Brown the Steaks:
    • Lightly dredge each steak in flour, shaking off excess.
    • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add a small amount of oil if needed.
    • Brown the steaks for 2–3 minutes per side until golden (do not cook through).
  5. Arrange in Baking Dish:
    • Place the browned steaks in a single layer in the prepared baking dish.
  6. Prepare the Gravy:
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together condensed cream of mushroom soup and 1 cup of milk until smooth.
    • Pour the gravy evenly over the steaks.
  7. Bake:
    • Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
    • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the gravy is bubbling and the steaks are fully cooked.
  8. Serve:
    • Let the dish rest for 5 minutes before serving.
    • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles, and enjoy!

Notes

  • Avoid overmixing the beef mixture to keep the steaks tender.
  • Brown the steaks for added flavor before baking.
  • For thicker gravy, reduce the milk slightly; for thinner gravy, add a bit more.
