Description

A timeless dessert featuring delicate, flaky dough wrapped around a spiced apple filling. Perfect for family gatherings, holidays, or as a cozy treat with your coffee.

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup canola oil, divided
  • ¾ cup warm water (120°F)
  • 1 large egg, beaten

For the Filling:

  • 1½ cups fresh breadcrumbs, toasted in butter
  • 6 cups (6 medium) apples, peeled and chopped (Granny Smith recommended)
  • ½ cup raisins (optional)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ⅓ cup melted butter
  • 3 tablespoons sour cream

Instructions

  • Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large bowl, mix the flour, ¼ cup canola oil, and warm water.
    • Add the beaten egg and knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
    • Cover with a damp cloth and let rest for 30 minutes.
  • Prepare the Filling:
    • Toast the breadcrumbs in melted butter over medium heat until golden brown, then set aside to cool.
    • In a large bowl, mix apples, sugar, cinnamon, and raisins (if using).
    • Stir in the toasted breadcrumbs and sour cream until well combined.
  • Roll Out the Dough:
    • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Roll the dough on a lightly floured surface as thin as possible, ideally transparent.
    • Transfer the dough onto a clean, floured kitchen towel or parchment paper for easy rolling.
  • Assemble the Strudel:
    • Spread the apple filling evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border.
    • Use the towel or parchment paper to gently roll the dough into a log, starting from one of the shorter edges.
    • Seal the edges by pinching them together to keep the filling inside.
  • Bake the Strudel:
    • Place the rolled strudel seam side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
    • Brush the top with the remaining ¼ cup canola oil for a golden crust.
    • Bake for 35–45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and crispy.
  • Cool and Serve:
    • Let the strudel cool for 10–15 minutes.
    • Dust with powdered sugar before slicing and serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • For a shortcut, use store-bought phyllo dough or puff pastry.
  • To prevent soggy dough, ensure the breadcrumbs are toasted and spread evenly.
  • Add chopped nuts, dried cranberries, or a splash of rum for extra flavor.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
