Description
Baked Asiago Cheese Onions are a delicious and savory dish featuring hollowed-out onions stuffed with a flavorful mixture of Asiago cheese and herbs, baked to perfection.
Ingredients
- 2 large yellow onions
- 1 cup shredded Asiago cheese
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ cup breadcrumbs (optional)
- Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Cut the tops off the onions and peel them. Hollow out the center of each onion, leaving about 1/2 inch of the onion intact.
- In a bowl, mix the shredded Asiago cheese, olive oil, garlic powder, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
- Stuff each hollowed onion with the cheese mixture, pressing it down gently to pack it in. If using breadcrumbs, sprinkle them on top of the cheese mixture for added crunch.
- Place the stuffed onions in a baking dish and add about 1/4 inch of water to the bottom of the dish to help steam the onions.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the onions are tender and the cheese is bubbly and golden.
- Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before garnishing with fresh parsley if desired.
Notes
- For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the cheese mixture.
- Try substituting the Asiago cheese with Parmesan or Gruyère for a different flavor profile.
