Description

Baked Asiago Cheese Onions are a delicious and savory dish featuring hollowed-out onions stuffed with a flavorful mixture of Asiago cheese and herbs, baked to perfection.

Ingredients

  • 2 large yellow onions
  • 1 cup shredded Asiago cheese
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs (optional)
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cut the tops off the onions and peel them. Hollow out the center of each onion, leaving about 1/2 inch of the onion intact.
  3. In a bowl, mix the shredded Asiago cheese, olive oil, garlic powder, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
  4. Stuff each hollowed onion with the cheese mixture, pressing it down gently to pack it in. If using breadcrumbs, sprinkle them on top of the cheese mixture for added crunch.
  5. Place the stuffed onions in a baking dish and add about 1/4 inch of water to the bottom of the dish to help steam the onions.
  6. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  7. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the onions are tender and the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before garnishing with fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the cheese mixture.
  • Try substituting the Asiago cheese with Parmesan or Gruyère for a different flavor profile.
