Description
Buttery Apple Pie Bars with a Flaky Crust are irresistible!
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cut into cubes
- 6 to 8 tablespoons ice water
- 4 cups apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced (about 4 medium apples)
- 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Granulated sugar for sprinkling
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set aside.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar. Add the chilled butter and mix with a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough comes together. Divide the dough in half, shape into disks, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- In another bowl, toss the sliced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, cornstarch, and vanilla extract. Set aside to let the flavors meld.
- Roll out one disk of dough on a floured surface to fit the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Place the rolled dough in the dish and press it down gently.
- Pour the apple mixture over the crust, spreading it evenly.
- Roll out the second disk of dough and place it over the apple filling. Trim any excess dough and crimp the edges to seal. Cut a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
- Brush the top crust with the beaten egg and sprinkle with granulated sugar.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are bubbly. Let cool in the pan for at least 30 minutes before slicing into bars.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, add a tablespoon of caramel sauce to the apple mixture before baking.
- Substitute half of the apples with pears for a unique twist on the classic apple pie flavor.
