Description

A bold and flavorful one-pan meal, Cajun Dirty Rice is the perfect blend of spiced beef, tender vegetables, and fluffy rice—finished with melty cheese and a touch of heat. This comforting Southern classic makes dinner exciting and easy with every bite.

Ingredients

1 tbsp olive oil or sunflower oil
500 g beef mince (5% fat or your preference)
1 onion, peeled and chopped
3 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
4 celery sticks, chopped into small chunks
3 green peppers, chopped into small chunks
4 tsp Cajun spice mix (adjust to your spice level)
200 g long grain rice, rinsed thoroughly
4 tbsp tomato puree
800 ml hot beef stock (from a cube is fine)
75 g grated cheese
6 spring onions, optional for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a large, deep frying pan over medium heat. Add the beef mince and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until browned.

  2. Add chopped onion, garlic, celery, green peppers, and Cajun seasoning to the pan. Sauté for 5 more minutes until the vegetables are softened.

  3. Add the rinsed long grain rice, tomato puree, and beef stock. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir well to combine.

  4. Cover the pan and let the mixture simmer for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the rice is tender and the liquid has been absorbed.

  5. Preheat the grill to high. Fluff the rice with a fork, then sprinkle the grated cheese evenly over the top.

  6. Place the pan under the grill for 3–5 minutes until the cheese is melted and golden.

  7. Garnish with sliced spring onions if desired. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

You can substitute the beef mince with turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
Add more Cajun spice or a dash of hot sauce for extra heat.
This dish reheats well and is perfect for meal prep.
For added depth, try using a mix of red and green peppers.
