A delicious twist on a classic dessert, this Caramel Apple Pie combines sweet, tender apples with rich caramel sauce.
Ingredients
- 1 pre-made pie crust (9-inch)
- 6 cups apples, peeled and sliced (about 6 medium apples, such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream (for serving)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and flour. Toss until the apples are well coated.
- Pour half of the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust, spreading it evenly. Drizzle half of the caramel sauce over the apples.
- Add the remaining apple mixture on top and drizzle with the rest of the caramel sauce. Dot the top with small pieces of butter.
- Cover the pie with the second pie crust or create a lattice top. Seal and flute the edges. Brush the top crust with the beaten egg for a golden finish.
- Cut a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for an additional 30-35 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let the pie cool for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the filling to set.
Notes
- For an extra flavor boost, add 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the apple mixture.
- Consider using a mix of different apple varieties for a more complex flavor profile.
