Description
Caramelized Mushrooms and Onions are a delicious and versatile side dish that can elevate any meal with their rich flavor and sweetness.
Ingredients
- 8 ounces cremini or button mushrooms, sliced
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (optional)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat until melted and hot.
- Add the sliced onions and salt to the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes until the onions start to soften.
- Add the sliced mushrooms and black pepper to the skillet. Stir to combine and continue cooking for another 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms and onions are deeply caramelized and golden brown.
- If using, stir in the balsamic vinegar and thyme, cooking for an additional 2-3 minutes until the vinegar has evaporated and the mixture is well combined.
- Remove from heat and serve warm as a side dish, topping for burgers, or as a filling for sandwiches.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, add a splash of white wine during the cooking process after adding the mushrooms.
- Try adding a pinch of red pepper flakes for a little heat or a sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese for extra flavor before serving.
