Description

Char Siu Chicken is a deliciously marinated and grilled chicken dish that is sweet, savory, and packed with flavor.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons five-spice powder
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red food coloring (optional)
  • Green onions, sliced (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, five-spice powder, garlic, ginger, and red food coloring if using. Mix well to create the marinade.
  2. Add the chicken thighs to the marinade, ensuring they are fully coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best flavor.
  3. Preheat your grill or oven to 400°F. If using a grill, lightly oil the grates.
  4. Remove the chicken from the marinade, reserving the marinade for basting.
  5. Grill the chicken for about 6-7 minutes per side, basting with the reserved marinade, until the chicken is cooked through and has a nice char. If baking, place the chicken on a lined baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes, basting halfway through.
  6. Once cooked, let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before slicing. Garnish with sliced green onions before serving.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add 1 teaspoon of chili paste to the marinade.
  • Serve with steamed rice and stir-fried vegetables for a complete meal.
