Description

A classic homemade lasagna recipe featuring layers of pasta, meat, cheese, and rich tomato sauce.

Ingredients

  • 9 lasagna noodles
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and garlic, sautéing until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add ground beef and Italian sausage to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon, about 8-10 minutes. Drain excess fat.
  5. Stir in crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes to let flavors meld.
  6. In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until smooth.
  7. In a 9×13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom. Place 3 lasagna noodles on top.
  8. Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by a third of the mozzarella cheese and a layer of meat sauce. Repeat the layers, finishing with noodles, meat sauce, and remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top.
  9. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until cheese is bubbly and golden.
  10. Let the lasagna cool for 10-15 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian option, substitute the meat with sautéed vegetables like zucchini, mushrooms, and spinach.
  • Add a layer of spinach or kale for extra nutrition and flavor.
