Description

Country Cabbage Rolls are a delicious family recipe made with tender cabbage leaves filled with a savory mixture of ground beef, rice, and spices, topped with a flavorful tomato sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 large head of green cabbage
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage and place the whole head in the boiling water for about 2-3 minutes, or until the outer leaves are tender. Remove the cabbage and let it cool.
  2. Carefully peel off 12 leaves and set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and paprika. Mix until well combined.
  4. Place about 1/4 cup of the beef mixture in the center of each cabbage leaf. Fold in the sides and roll up tightly.
  5. In a large baking dish, spread a thin layer of tomato sauce on the bottom. Arrange the cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish.
  6. In a separate bowl, mix the remaining tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and lemon juice. Pour this mixture over the cabbage rolls.
  7. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for 1 hour. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken.
  8. Let the cabbage rolls cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For added flavor, try substituting ground turkey or chicken for the beef.
  • You can also add chopped bell peppers or mushrooms to the filling for extra vegetables.
  • If you prefer a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the tomato sauce.
