Description
Country Cabbage Rolls are a delicious family recipe made with tender cabbage leaves filled with a savory mixture of ground beef, rice, and spices, topped with a flavorful tomato sauce.
Ingredients
- 1 large head of green cabbage
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
- 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage and place the whole head in the boiling water for about 2-3 minutes, or until the outer leaves are tender. Remove the cabbage and let it cool.
- Carefully peel off 12 leaves and set aside.
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and paprika. Mix until well combined.
- Place about 1/4 cup of the beef mixture in the center of each cabbage leaf. Fold in the sides and roll up tightly.
- In a large baking dish, spread a thin layer of tomato sauce on the bottom. Arrange the cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish.
- In a separate bowl, mix the remaining tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and lemon juice. Pour this mixture over the cabbage rolls.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for 1 hour. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken.
- Let the cabbage rolls cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- For added flavor, try substituting ground turkey or chicken for the beef.
- You can also add chopped bell peppers or mushrooms to the filling for extra vegetables.
- If you prefer a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the tomato sauce.
