Description
Creamed Peas and Potatoes is a comforting side dish made with tender potatoes and sweet peas in a creamy sauce.
Ingredients
- 2 cups diced potatoes (about 2 medium potatoes)
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, bring about 4 cups of water to a boil. Add the diced potatoes and cook for 10-12 minutes, or until tender. Drain and set aside.
- In the same saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture is lightly golden.
- Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
- Add the salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder (if using) to the sauce, stirring to combine.
- Stir in the cooked potatoes and frozen peas, mixing well to coat them in the creamy sauce. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the peas are heated through.
- Serve warm as a side dish.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, substitute half-and-half for the milk.
- Add cooked bacon or ham for a heartier dish, or sprinkle with fresh herbs like parsley or dill for added freshness.
