Description
Crispy Tennessee Onions are a deliciously cheesy baked treat that combines the sweetness of onions with a crunchy coating and melted cheese.
Ingredients
- 2 large sweet onions, sliced into 1/4-inch rings
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (optional)
- Cooking spray
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly spray it with cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, soak the sliced onions in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes.
- In another bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
- Remove the onions from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Dredge each onion ring in the flour mixture, ensuring they are well-coated.
- Arrange the coated onion rings in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Spray the tops lightly with cooking spray.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, then remove and sprinkle the shredded cheddar and grated Parmesan evenly over the onion rings.
- Return to the oven and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the onions are crispy and golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired before serving.
Notes
- For extra crunch, try adding panko breadcrumbs to the flour mixture.
- For a spicy kick, mix in some cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes to the seasoning blend.
