Description

Crispy Tennessee Onions are a deliciously cheesy baked treat that combines the sweetness of onions with a crunchy coating and melted cheese.

Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet onions, sliced into 1/4-inch rings
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (optional)
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly spray it with cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, soak the sliced onions in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes.
  3. In another bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
  4. Remove the onions from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Dredge each onion ring in the flour mixture, ensuring they are well-coated.
  5. Arrange the coated onion rings in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Spray the tops lightly with cooking spray.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, then remove and sprinkle the shredded cheddar and grated Parmesan evenly over the onion rings.
  7. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the onions are crispy and golden brown.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired before serving.

Notes

  • For extra crunch, try adding panko breadcrumbs to the flour mixture.
  • For a spicy kick, mix in some cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes to the seasoning blend.
