Description

Crispy Tot Chili Casserole is a hearty and delicious dish that combines chili and crispy tater tots, making it a family favorite.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 ounces) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 bag (32 ounces) frozen tater tots
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (optional for serving)
  • Chopped green onions (optional for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until the onion is translucent.
  4. Stir in the kidney beans, black beans, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, chili powder, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. In a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, spread the chili mixture evenly on the bottom.
  6. Layer the frozen tater tots on top of the chili mixture in a single layer.
  7. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the tater tots.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden brown and crispy.
  9. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Top with sour cream and chopped green onions if desired.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add diced jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce to the chili mixture.
  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option, or use a plant-based meat alternative for a vegetarian version.
