Description

A delicious and hearty French Onion Patty Melt featuring caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, and seasoned beef patties, all grilled to perfection between slices of rye bread.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

Instructions

  1. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Season with salt and set aside.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Form the mixture into 4 equal patties.
  3. In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of butter and increase the heat to medium-high. Cook the beef patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness.
  4. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and cover the skillet to melt the cheese.
  5. While the cheese is melting, spread mayonnaise on one side of each slice of rye bread and Dijon mustard on the other side.
  6. Assemble the patty melts by placing a cheeseburger patty on the unbuttered side of one slice of bread, topping it with caramelized onions, and then placing another slice of bread on top, mayonnaise side out.
  7. In the skillet, grill the sandwich over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve hot.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian option, substitute the ground beef with a plant-based burger and use cheese alternatives if desired.
  • Add sliced mushrooms to the onions while caramelizing for an extra layer of flavor.
