Description
A delicious and hearty French Onion Patty Melt featuring caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, and seasoned beef patties, all grilled to perfection between slices of rye bread.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 slices rye bread
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
Instructions
- In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Season with salt and set aside.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Form the mixture into 4 equal patties.
- In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of butter and increase the heat to medium-high. Cook the beef patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness.
- During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and cover the skillet to melt the cheese.
- While the cheese is melting, spread mayonnaise on one side of each slice of rye bread and Dijon mustard on the other side.
- Assemble the patty melts by placing a cheeseburger patty on the unbuttered side of one slice of bread, topping it with caramelized onions, and then placing another slice of bread on top, mayonnaise side out.
- In the skillet, grill the sandwich over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy.
- Remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve hot.
Notes
- For a vegetarian option, substitute the ground beef with a plant-based burger and use cheese alternatives if desired.
- Add sliced mushrooms to the onions while caramelizing for an extra layer of flavor.
