Description
German Potato Dumplings are a traditional dish made from mashed potatoes, flour, and seasonings, resulting in soft and fluffy dumplings that are perfect for serving with various sauces.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon butter (for serving)
- Chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)
Instructions
- Place the cubed potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil and cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and let cool slightly.
- Once the potatoes are cool enough to handle, mash them until smooth. Allow the mashed potatoes to cool completely.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooled mashed potatoes, flour, egg, salt, nutmeg, and pepper. Mix until a smooth dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour as needed.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a gentle simmer.
- With floured hands, form the potato mixture into balls about the size of a golf ball.
- Carefully drop the dumplings into the simmering water. Cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until they float to the surface.
- Remove the dumplings with a slotted spoon and place them on a serving platter. Toss with melted butter and garnish with chopped parsley.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, add a pinch of garlic powder to the dough.
- You can serve the dumplings with a variety of sauces, such as mushroom gravy or brown butter with sage.
