Description
A flavorful Italian dish featuring cabbage, tomatoes, and spices, topped with Parmesan cheese.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 small head of green cabbage, chopped (about 4 cups)
- 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
- Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender.
- Pour in the diced tomatoes (with their juice), oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes if using. Season with salt and pepper. Stir well to combine.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let it simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Once the cabbage is fully cooked and the flavors have melded, remove from heat and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese.
- Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
Notes
- For a heartier dish, add cooked sausage or ground turkey to the skillet after sautéing the onions.
- For a vegetarian option, toss in some chickpeas for added protein and texture.
