Description
The Muffaletta Sandwich is a flavorful classic originating from New Orleans, featuring layers of meats, cheeses, and a tangy olive salad, all nestled in a round Italian bread.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf (10-12 inches) round Italian bread
- 1/2 cup olive salad (store-bought or homemade)
- 1/4 pound sliced salami
- 1/4 pound sliced ham
- 1/4 pound sliced mortadella
- 1/4 pound sliced provolone cheese
- 1/4 pound sliced mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup sliced pepperoncini (optional)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Slice the Italian bread in half horizontally. Hollow out some of the bread from the top and bottom halves to create space for the fillings.
- Drizzle the inside of the bottom half with olive oil and season lightly with salt and pepper.
- Spread the olive salad evenly over the bottom half of the bread.
- Layer the salami, ham, mortadella, provolone, and mozzarella on top of the olive salad.
- If using, add the sliced pepperoncini for an extra kick.
- Place the top half of the bread on the sandwich and press down gently to compact the fillings.
- Wrap the sandwich tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or up to overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
- When ready to serve, unwrap the sandwich, slice it into wedges, and enjoy.
Notes
- For a vegetarian version, substitute the meats with grilled vegetables and additional cheese.
- Experiment with different types of cheese, such as gouda or cheddar, for a unique flavor twist.
