Description
Overnight Caramel French Toast is a sweet and indulgent breakfast dish that is prepared the night before, allowing the bread to soak in a rich custard mixture and topped with caramel sauce and nuts.
Ingredients
- 8 slices of thick bread (such as brioche or challah)
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
- Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
Instructions
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
- Arrange the slices of bread in a single layer in the dish. You can cut the bread into halves or quarters for easier serving if desired.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread slices, ensuring all pieces are soaked.
- Drizzle the caramel sauce over the top, allowing it to seep into the bread. If using, sprinkle the chopped nuts over the caramel.
- Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight (or at least 4 hours) to allow the bread to absorb the liquid.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Remove the plastic wrap and bake the French toast for 35-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing. Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve warm.
Notes
- For a fruitier version, add sliced bananas or berries between the layers of bread before soaking.
- Substitute the caramel sauce with maple syrup for a different flavor profile, or use a combination of both for extra sweetness.
