Description

Overnight Caramel French Toast is a sweet and indulgent breakfast dish that is prepared the night before, allowing the bread to soak in a rich custard mixture and topped with caramel sauce and nuts.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices of thick bread (such as brioche or challah)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Arrange the slices of bread in a single layer in the dish. You can cut the bread into halves or quarters for easier serving if desired.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread slices, ensuring all pieces are soaked.
  5. Drizzle the caramel sauce over the top, allowing it to seep into the bread. If using, sprinkle the chopped nuts over the caramel.
  6. Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight (or at least 4 hours) to allow the bread to absorb the liquid.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Remove the plastic wrap and bake the French toast for 35-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
  9. Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing. Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve warm.

Notes

  • For a fruitier version, add sliced bananas or berries between the layers of bread before soaking.
  • Substitute the caramel sauce with maple syrup for a different flavor profile, or use a combination of both for extra sweetness.
