Description
A delicious recipe for perfectly tender and glossy glazed pearl onions, ideal as a side dish.
Ingredients
- 1 pound pearl onions, peeled
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/4 cup chicken or vegetable broth
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1 teaspoon dried thyme)
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the peeled pearl onions and sauté for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they start to brown slightly.
- Pour in the chicken or vegetable broth, granulated sugar, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine, then bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and let the onions cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are tender and the liquid has reduced.
- Uncover the saucepan and increase the heat to medium-high. Add the fresh thyme and balsamic vinegar, stirring gently to coat the onions.
- Cook for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy.
- Remove from heat and let the onions sit for a few minutes before serving. They can be served warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- For a sweeter glaze, add an extra tablespoon of sugar.
- For a savory twist, incorporate a splash of soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce for added depth of flavor.
