  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1 teaspoon dried thyme)
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the peeled pearl onions and sauté for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they start to brown slightly.
  3. Pour in the chicken or vegetable broth, granulated sugar, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine, then bring the mixture to a simmer.
  4. Reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and let the onions cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are tender and the liquid has reduced.
  5. Uncover the saucepan and increase the heat to medium-high. Add the fresh thyme and balsamic vinegar, stirring gently to coat the onions.
  6. Cook for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy.
  7. Remove from heat and let the onions sit for a few minutes before serving. They can be served warm or at room temperature.
