Description

Indulge in the ultimate comfort food with these Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes! Juicy, caramelized ground beef, melted Provolone cheese, and sautéed vegetables come together in a rich, savory filling piled high on soft brioche buns. Perfect for weeknight dinners or game day, this dish is easy to make and bursting with flavor.

Ingredients

For the Filling:

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 1 small green bell pepper, diced
  • 8 ounces brown mushrooms, minced
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 8 ounces Provolone cheese, chopped (use 6 ounces for less cheesy filling)

For Serving:

  • 6 brioche hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Brown the Ground Beef:
    • Heat a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Add ground beef and cook undisturbed for 2–3 minutes to develop a deep brown crust.
    • Break apart the beef and cook until browned. Remove the beef from the skillet, leaving any rendered fat.
  2. Sauté the Vegetables:
    • In the same skillet, melt the butter.
    • Add the diced onion, bell pepper, and minced mushrooms.
    • Let the vegetables brown for 1–2 minutes without stirring, then stir and cook for another 1–2 minutes until caramelized.
  3. Combine the Beef and Vegetables:
    • Return the browned ground beef to the skillet with the vegetables. Stir to combine evenly.
  4. Create the Sauce:
    • In a small bowl, whisk together beef broth and cornstarch until smooth.
    • Pour the mixture into the skillet. Add ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
    • Stir to coat the beef and vegetables and cook for 3–5 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  5. Add the Cheese:
    • Turn off the heat and stir in the chopped Provolone cheese.
    • Mix until the cheese is fully melted, creating a gooey, flavorful filling.
  6. Assemble and Serve:
    • Lightly toast the brioche buns if desired.
    • Spoon the cheesy beef mixture onto each bun, piling it high.
    • Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

  • Don’t Skip the Crust: Allow the beef to develop a crust for enhanced flavor.
  • Customize Cheese: Swap Provolone for mozzarella, cheddar, or Swiss if preferred.
  • Use Quality Buns: Soft, buttery brioche buns elevate this dish.
  • Add Heat: Sprinkle in red pepper flakes or diced jalapeños for a spicy twist.
