Description
Savory Beef Spiral Borek is a delicious pastry filled with seasoned ground beef, onions, and spices, rolled into a spiral shape and baked to golden perfection.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Gradually add the water and olive oil, mixing until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- While the dough is resting, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until browned, about 7-10 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary. Stir in the paprika, cumin, black pepper, and salt. Remove from heat and mix in the chopped parsley. Allow the filling to cool slightly.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Divide the rested dough into two equal portions. Roll out one portion on a floured surface into a thin rectangle, about 1/8 inch thick. Spread half of the beef filling evenly over the dough.
- Starting from one long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Coil the log into a spiral shape and place it on a greased baking sheet. Repeat with the second portion of dough and remaining filling.
- Brush the tops of the spirals with the beaten egg. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve warm.
Notes
- For a vegetarian option, substitute the ground beef with sautéed mushrooms and spinach.
- Add a sprinkle of feta cheese to the beef filling for an extra layer of flavor.
