Description

Savory Beef Spiral Borek is a delicious pastry filled with seasoned ground beef, onions, and spices, rolled into a spiral shape and baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Gradually add the water and olive oil, mixing until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  2. While the dough is resting, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  3. Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until browned, about 7-10 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary. Stir in the paprika, cumin, black pepper, and salt. Remove from heat and mix in the chopped parsley. Allow the filling to cool slightly.
  4. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  5. Divide the rested dough into two equal portions. Roll out one portion on a floured surface into a thin rectangle, about 1/8 inch thick. Spread half of the beef filling evenly over the dough.
  6. Starting from one long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Coil the log into a spiral shape and place it on a greased baking sheet. Repeat with the second portion of dough and remaining filling.
  7. Brush the tops of the spirals with the beaten egg. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian option, substitute the ground beef with sautéed mushrooms and spinach.
  • Add a sprinkle of feta cheese to the beef filling for an extra layer of flavor.
