Description
A delicious and hearty recipe for smothered hamburger steak, featuring juicy beef patties topped with a rich mushroom and onion gravy.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix until just combined. Form the mixture into 4 equal patties.
- In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and mushrooms. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes, or until the onions are translucent and the mushrooms are tender.
- Pour in the beef broth and bring to a simmer. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and water to create a slurry. Stir the slurry into the broth and cook until the sauce thickens, about 2-3 minutes.
- Return the hamburger patties to the skillet, spooning the sauce over them. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes to heat through.
- Serve the smothered hamburger steaks hot, garnished with fresh parsley.
Notes
- For a spicy kick, add a teaspoon of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the beef mixture.
- Serve over mashed potatoes or rice to soak up the delicious gravy.
