Description

Southern Banana Cobbler is a decadent dessert made with ripe bananas, a sweet batter, and a rich sauce that forms while baking.

Ingredients

  • 3 ripe bananas, sliced
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced bananas, granulated sugar, lemon juice, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt. Gently toss to coat the bananas and set aside to let the flavors meld for about 10 minutes.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder. Add the milk and melted butter, stirring until just combined. The batter will be slightly lumpy.
  4. Pour the banana mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Spoon the batter evenly over the bananas.
  5. In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and water until combined. Carefully pour this mixture over the batter in the baking dish. Do not stir; it will create a sauce as it bakes.
  6. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let it cool for about 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, try adding a teaspoon of nutmeg to the banana mixture.
  • Serve the cobbler warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra treat.
