Description

Sweet and Sour Green Beans is a delicious side dish that combines the crispness of fresh green beans with a tangy and sweet sauce.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans (optional)
  • 1/4 cup chopped red onion (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add the trimmed green beans and cook for about 4-5 minutes until they are bright green and tender-crisp. Drain and immediately transfer the beans to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process. Let them cool for about 5 minutes, then drain again and set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the apple cider vinegar, granulated sugar, soy sauce, olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt until the sugar is dissolved.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the cooled green beans and pour the sweet and sour sauce over them. Stir to coat the beans evenly. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beans are heated through and the sauce has thickened slightly.
  4. If using, stir in the chopped pecans and red onion just before serving for added crunch and flavor.
  5. Serve warm or at room temperature as a side dish.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sauce.
  • Substitute honey or maple syrup for granulated sugar for a different sweetness profile.
