Description
Taste Tennessee Onions are crispy, flavorful onion rings that are perfect as a snack or appetizer.
Ingredients
- 2 large sweet onions, sliced into 1/4-inch rings
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil (for frying)
Instructions
- Begin by heating the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. You want enough oil to cover the bottom of the skillet for frying.
- In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
- In another bowl, pour the buttermilk.
- In a third bowl, place the cornmeal.
- Take an onion ring, dip it into the buttermilk, allowing any excess to drip off.
- Next, coat the onion ring in the flour mixture, shaking off any excess.
- Dip the floured onion ring back into the buttermilk, then coat it in the cornmeal, pressing lightly to adhere.
- Carefully place the coated onion ring into the hot oil. Repeat with additional rings, being careful not to overcrowd the skillet.
- Fry the onion rings for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
- Remove the fried onion rings and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
- For a spicier kick, add cayenne pepper to the flour mixture.
- Try using different types of onions, like Vidalia or red onions, for varied flavors.
