Description
Tennessee Onions are crispy, flavorful onion rings that are soaked in buttermilk and coated in a seasoned flour mixture before being fried to perfection.
Ingredients
- 2 large sweet onions, sliced into 1/4-inch rings
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
- In a large bowl, soak the sliced onions in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes.
- In another bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Mix well.
- Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or frying pan over medium heat until it reaches 350°F.
- Remove the onions from the buttermilk, allowing excess liquid to drip off. Dredge each onion ring in the flour mixture.
- Carefully place the coated onion rings in the hot oil, frying in batches. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the onions and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Serve hot as a side dish or appetizer.
Notes
- For extra crunch, try adding 1/2 cup of cornmeal to the flour mixture.
- For a spicy kick, toss in some chopped jalapeños with the onions before soaking in buttermilk.
