Description

This easy-to-make Christmas Crack (Cracker Toffee) combines salty crackers, buttery toffee, and rich chocolate for an irresistible holiday treat. Customize it with festive toppings and watch it disappear in minutes!

Ingredients

  • Saltine crackers: 40 (1 sleeve)
  • Salted butter: 1 cup (2 sticks)
  • Light brown sugar: 1 cup
  • Pure vanilla extract: 1 teaspoon
  • Milk chocolate chips: 12-ounce bag
  • Optional toppings: Crushed nuts, sprinkles, shredded coconut, or crushed candy canes

Instructions

  • Prep the Pan and Oven:
    • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
    • Line a 10×15-inch rimmed baking sheet with nonstick aluminum foil or spray regular foil with nonstick spray.
    • Arrange saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared sheet.
  • Make the Toffee:
    • Combine butter and brown sugar in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat.
    • Stir continuously until the mixture boils.
    • Let it bubble for 2 minutes while stirring, then remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  • Assemble and Bake:
    • Pour the hot toffee over the crackers, spreading it evenly.
    • Bake for 6 minutes until the toffee bubbles and spreads over the crackers.
  • Add the Chocolate Layer:
    • Remove the baking sheet from the oven and sprinkle chocolate chips over the hot toffee.
    • Let sit for 1-2 minutes, then spread the melted chocolate evenly with an offset spatula.
  • Customize and Cool:
    • Add your choice of toppings while the chocolate is still soft.
    • Allow the treat to cool completely at room temperature, or speed up cooling in the fridge or freezer.
  • Break into Pieces:
    • Once set, peel the foil off and break the Christmas Crack into bite-sized pieces. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use high-quality chocolate for the best taste.
  • Avoid overcooking the toffee to prevent it from burning.
  • Experiment with different toppings for variety, like mini marshmallows or dried cranberries.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or freeze for extended freshness.
