Description

Delicious Asian-style cabbage rolls filled with ground pork and rice, served with a savory sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 large green cabbage
  • 500 g ground pork
  • 100 g cooked white rice
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • ½ tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 egg
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 480 ml chicken broth
  • 60 ml soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp honey or brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • Optional: chili flakes or sliced red chili

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cabbage: Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the cabbage leaves one at a time and blanch them for 2–3 minutes, until softened. Transfer to cold water and drain. Trim the thick center vein if needed.
  2. Make the filling: In a bowl, combine ground pork, cooked rice, garlic, ginger, green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, pepper, egg, and salt. Mix until well combined.
  3. Roll the cabbage: Place about 2–3 tbsp of filling near the bottom of each cabbage leaf. Fold in the sides and roll tightly, like a small burrito. Repeat with the remaining filling.
  4. Make the sauce: In a large skillet or Dutch oven, combine chicken broth, soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger.
  5. Cook: Arrange the cabbage rolls seam-side down in the sauce. Cover and simmer over medium-low heat for 35–45 minutes, or until the pork is fully cooked and the cabbage is tender.
  6. Thicken the sauce: Mix cornstarch with water. Stir it into the simmering sauce and cook for 1–2 minutes, until slightly thickened.
  7. Serve: Spoon the sauce over the cabbage rolls and garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds. Add chili flakes for a little heat.

Notes

  • Ensure the cabbage leaves are softened enough to roll without tearing.
  • Feel free to adjust the filling ingredients to your taste.
  • For a vegetarian option, substitute ground pork with a plant-based protein.
