Description

A classic German dessert, Black Forest Cake is a rich chocolate cake layered with whipped cream and cherries, perfect for any celebration.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 jar (24 ounces) Morello cherries, drained and juice reserved
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for the whipped cream)
  • Chocolate shavings (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.
  3. Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes until well combined.
  4. Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth (the batter will be thin).
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from the pans and transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. Once cooled, slice each cake in half horizontally to create four layers.
  8. Place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of whipped cream over the cake, then add a layer of cherries.
  9. Repeat this process with the next two layers, finishing with the last cake layer on top.
  10. Frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining whipped cream. Garnish with chocolate shavings and any remaining cherries.
  11. Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, add a tablespoon of espresso powder to the batter.
  • Substitute the Morello cherries with fresh cherries or raspberries for a different fruit flavor.
