Description

A healthy and delicious dish featuring broccoli tossed in a flavorful garlic sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 large head broccoli (about pounds), cut into florets
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¾ cup low-sodium vegetable broth (or chicken broth)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional, but recommended)
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce (optional, for a touch of sweetness)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar or honey
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons cold water
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Broccoli: Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the broccoli florets and blanch for 2–3 minutes until bright green and just tender. Drain immediately and rinse under cold water (or place in an ice bath) to stop the cooking. Drain well.
  2. Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the vegetable broth, soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, sugar, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). In another small bowl, mix the cornstarch and cold water to create a slurry.
  3. Cook the Dish: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the minced garlic and stir-fry for 30 seconds, until fragrant. Pour in the sauce mixture and bring it to a gentle simmer. Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens. Add the broccoli and toss until evenly coated and heated through, about 2 minutes.
  4. Serve: Transfer to a serving dish and garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions, if desired.

Notes

  • For extra crunch, skip the blanching and stir-fry the broccoli with 2–3 tablespoons of water, covered, for about 4–5 minutes before adding the sauce.
  • Add sliced mushrooms, carrots, bell peppers, or snap peas for more vegetables.
  • For a spicy version, increase the red pepper flakes or add 1 teaspoon of chili garlic sauce.
