Description

Cheesy Ham Potato Casserole is a comforting dish made with layers of thinly sliced potatoes, diced ham, and a creamy cheese sauce, topped with melted cheese.

Ingredients

  • 900 g potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 300 g cooked ham, diced
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 30 g butter
  • 30 g all-purpose flour
  • 400 ml milk
  • 150 ml heavy cream
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • 150 g shredded cheddar cheese
  • 100 g shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 40 g grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley or green onions, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 190°C. Grease a 23 × 33 cm baking dish.
  2. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened. Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  3. Stir in the flour and cook for about 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the milk and cream until smooth. Cook for 3–5 minutes, stirring frequently, until slightly thickened.
  4. Remove from the heat. Stir in 100 g cheddar, 50 g mozzarella, and the Parmesan until melted. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
  5. Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Sprinkle with half of the diced ham, then pour over half of the cheese sauce.
  6. Add the remaining potatoes and ham, then pour the remaining sauce evenly over everything.
  7. Cover tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 35–40 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and sprinkle the remaining 50 g cheddar and 50 g mozzarella over the top.
  9. Return to the oven uncovered for 15–20 minutes, until the potatoes are completely tender and the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden.
  10. Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes, then garnish with fresh parsley or green onions and serve warm.

Notes

  • Add 150 g cooked bacon for a ham-and-bacon version.
  • Add broccoli, peas, or sautéed mushrooms for extra vegetables.
  • Use Gruyère, Monterey Jack, or Colby instead of cheddar.
  • For a crispy topping, mix 40 g breadcrumbs + 20 g Parmesan + 1 tbsp melted butter and sprinkle over the casserole before the final 15 minutes.
  • Slice the potatoes thinly and evenly so they cook at the same rate.
  • Don’t skip the covered baking time—it helps the potatoes become tender without the cheese browning too quickly.
