Description
Cheesy Ham Potato Casserole is a comforting dish made with layers of thinly sliced potatoes, diced ham, and a creamy cheese sauce, topped with melted cheese.
Ingredients
- 900 g potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 300 g cooked ham, diced
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 30 g butter
- 30 g all-purpose flour
- 400 ml milk
- 150 ml heavy cream
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp paprika
- 150 g shredded cheddar cheese
- 100 g shredded mozzarella cheese
- 40 g grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 tbsp fresh parsley or green onions, chopped
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 190°C. Grease a 23 × 33 cm baking dish.
- Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened. Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
- Stir in the flour and cook for about 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the milk and cream until smooth. Cook for 3–5 minutes, stirring frequently, until slightly thickened.
- Remove from the heat. Stir in 100 g cheddar, 50 g mozzarella, and the Parmesan until melted. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
- Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Sprinkle with half of the diced ham, then pour over half of the cheese sauce.
- Add the remaining potatoes and ham, then pour the remaining sauce evenly over everything.
- Cover tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 35–40 minutes.
- Remove the foil and sprinkle the remaining 50 g cheddar and 50 g mozzarella over the top.
- Return to the oven uncovered for 15–20 minutes, until the potatoes are completely tender and the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden.
- Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes, then garnish with fresh parsley or green onions and serve warm.
Notes
- Add 150 g cooked bacon for a ham-and-bacon version.
- Add broccoli, peas, or sautéed mushrooms for extra vegetables.
- Use Gruyère, Monterey Jack, or Colby instead of cheddar.
- For a crispy topping, mix 40 g breadcrumbs + 20 g Parmesan + 1 tbsp melted butter and sprinkle over the casserole before the final 15 minutes.
- Slice the potatoes thinly and evenly so they cook at the same rate.
- Don’t skip the covered baking time—it helps the potatoes become tender without the cheese browning too quickly.
