Description

A decadent dessert that combines the classic flavors of crème brûlée with a moist cake, topped with a caramelized sugar crust.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup granulated sugar (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and 1 ½ cups of sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Once cooled, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Spread the whipped cream evenly over the top of the cake.
  9. Evenly sprinkle ½ cup of granulated sugar over the whipped cream layer.
  10. Using a kitchen torch, carefully caramelize the sugar until it forms a crispy, golden crust. If you don’t have a torch, place the cake under the broiler for 1-2 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning.
  11. Let the caramelized sugar cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a chocolate twist, add ½ cup of cocoa powder to the dry ingredients.
  • Try adding a layer of fresh berries on top of the whipped cream for added flavor and decoration.
