Description

A delicious and healthy stir fry featuring ground beef and cabbage, perfect for a quick meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • ½ small onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 4 cups green cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • ¼ tsp red pepper flakes, optional
  • 2 cups cooked white or brown rice
  • Sesame seeds
  • Extra sliced green onions

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sauce: Whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, honey, sesame oil, beef broth, cornstarch, and red pepper flakes. Set aside.
  2. Brown the beef: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook for 5–7 minutes, breaking it apart as it browns. Drain excess grease if necessary.
  3. Add aromatics: Stir in the onion, garlic, and ginger. Cook for 1–2 minutes, until fragrant.
  4. Cook the vegetables: Add the cabbage, carrots, and bell pepper. Stir-fry for 4–6 minutes, until the cabbage is tender but still has a little crunch.
  5. Add the sauce: Pour the sauce over the beef and vegetables. Toss well and cook for 2–3 minutes, until the sauce thickens and coats everything.
  6. Build the stack: Spoon a layer of cooked rice onto each plate. Add a generous layer of the beef-and-cabbage mixture, then another small layer of rice and beef if you want a taller stack.
  7. Garnish: Sprinkle with sesame seeds and green onions.

Notes

  • For a spicier dish, increase the amount of red pepper flakes.
  • Feel free to add other vegetables like broccoli or snap peas.
  • This dish can be made ahead and reheated for quick meals.
