Ingredients

  • lbs ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup diced carrots
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (for topping)
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder (for topping)
  • ½ teaspoon salt (for topping)
  • ½ cup cold butter, cubed (for topping)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (for topping)
  • ¾ cup buttermilk (for topping)
  • 3 tablespoons melted butter (for garlic butter topping)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder (for garlic butter topping)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (for garlic butter topping)
  • ¼ teaspoon dried oregano (for garlic butter topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and onion. Cook for 6–8 minutes, breaking up the beef, until browned.
  3. Drain excess grease. Add the garlic and carrots and cook for 2–3 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and stir for 1 minute.
  5. Stir in the beef broth, cream of mushroom soup, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, smoked paprika, black pepper, and salt. Simmer for 4–5 minutes, until thickened.
  6. Stir in the frozen peas and transfer the beef mixture to the prepared baking dish.
  7. To make the topping, whisk together the flour, baking powder, garlic powder, and salt in a bowl.
  8. Cut in the cold butter with a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  9. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese, then add the buttermilk. Mix just until a soft dough forms.
  10. Drop spoonfuls of the biscuit dough evenly over the beef filling.
  11. Bake for 25–30 minutes, until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.
  12. Mix the melted butter, garlic powder, parsley, and oregano. Brush generously over the hot biscuits.
  13. Let the cobbler rest for 5 minutes before serving.

  • For a spicier version, add red pepper flakes to the beef mixture.
