Description

A cozy and indulgent dessert that combines the rich flavors of chocolate cake with a gooey fudge layer, perfect for serving warm with ice cream.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 3/4 cups hot water
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • Vanilla ice cream for serving
  • Chocolate syrup for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch square baking dish or an 8-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Stir until well mixed.
  3. Add the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar and hot water until the sugar is dissolved. Slowly pour this mixture over the batter in the baking dish. Do not stir.
  6. If using, sprinkle the chopped nuts on top of the batter.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is set and a toothpick inserted into the cake portion comes out clean. The fudge will remain gooey underneath.
  8. Allow the cake to cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
  9. Serve warm, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and drizzled with chocolate syrup.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, add a teaspoon of instant coffee granules to the dry ingredients.
  • Experiment with different ice cream flavors, such as mint chocolate chip or caramel, for a unique twist on the classic sundae cake.
