Delicious Soft Baked Cheesy Pretzel Dogs that are perfect for any gathering!
Ingredients
- 2 cups warm water (110°F to 115°F)
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 8 hot dogs
- 8 ounces cheddar cheese, cut into sticks
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 1 large egg, beaten
- Coarse sea salt, for sprinkling
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, about 12 inches long.
- Place a cheese stick in the center of each hot dog, then wrap the dough around the hot dog, sealing the ends.
- In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil and add the baking soda. Carefully drop each wrapped hot dog into the boiling water for about 30 seconds, then remove and place on the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush each pretzel dog with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- For a spicy kick, try adding jalapeño slices inside the hot dogs.
- For a sweeter twist, brush the pretzel dogs with melted butter and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar after baking.
