Description

A delicious and easy recipe for Southern Fried Cabbage, perfect as a side dish or a main meal.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced (any color)
  • 1 pound cabbage, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
  • 4 slices cooked bacon, crumbled (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the diced onion and bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté for about 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened.
  3. Stir in the chopped cabbage and cook for another 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is wilted and tender.
  4. Add the minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Cook for an additional 2 minutes, stirring frequently.
  5. If desired, stir in the apple cider vinegar and sugar, and mix well. Cook for another minute to combine the flavors.
  6. If using, sprinkle the crumbled bacon over the top before serving.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, omit the bacon and add a splash of liquid smoke for flavor.
  • You can add other vegetables like carrots or zucchini for extra color and nutrients.
