A delicious and hearty casserole featuring layers of ground beef, creamy sauces, and topped with crispy Texas toast and melted cheese.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 small green bell pepper, diced
- 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup beef broth
- ½ cup sour cream
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 8 slices frozen Texas toast
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 9 × 13-inch baking dish.
- Brown the beef: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and onion. Cook for 6–8 minutes, breaking up the beef, until browned. Drain excess grease if needed.
- Cook the vegetables: Add bell pepper and mushrooms. Cook for 5–7 minutes, until softened. Stir in garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
- Season: Add Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Stir well.
- Make it creamy: Stir in beef broth and simmer for 2–3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in sour cream, mayonnaise, and Dijon mustard.
- Layer: Spread half of the beef mixture in the baking dish. Sprinkle with 1 cup cheddar and ¼ cup mozzarella. Add the remaining beef mixture and top with the remaining cheeses.
- Add Texas toast: Arrange the frozen Texas toast slices evenly over the top.
- Season the toast: Mix melted butter with garlic powder and brush over the Texas toast.
- Bake: Cover loosely with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 10–15 minutes, until the toast is golden and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve: Garnish with fresh parsley and let the casserole rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.
